What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any condition that requires prompt dental care to relieve pain, stop bleeding, prevent infection, or save a damaged tooth. Some emergencies occur after an accident or sports injury, while others develop because of untreated decay, infection, or damaged dental restorations.
If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it’s always best to call our office. Early treatment often prevents more extensive and costly dental procedures later.

What Should I Do If My Tooth Is Knocked Out?
A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate treatment. Acting quickly gives us the best chance of saving your tooth.
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (top portion), not the root.
- Gently rinse it with water if it is dirty, but do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.
- If possible, carefully place the tooth back into its socket.
- If you cannot replace it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk, saliva, or a tooth preservation solution.
- Call our office immediately for emergency treatment.
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not attempt to place it back into the socket. Contact our office for guidance.

Managing Dental Pain Before Your Appointment
If you cannot be seen immediately, these temporary measures may help reduce discomfort until you arrive at our office:
- Rinse gently with warm salt water to reduce irritation.
- Take over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen, following package directions (unless instructed otherwise by your physician).
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.
- Avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth.
- Avoid extremely hot, cold, or sugary foods and beverages.
- Use dental wax or clean cotton to cover sharp edges on broken teeth.
- Keep the area as clean as possible by gently brushing and rinsing.
Important: Home remedies provide only temporary relief and should never replace professional dental treatment.
Don’t Ignore a Dental Emergency
Not every dental emergency causes immediate pain. Cracked teeth, damaged restorations, or early infections may initially seem minor but can worsen quickly without treatment. Prompt care can often save a tooth, prevent infection from spreading, and reduce the need for more extensive dental procedures.
If you believe you’re experiencing a dental emergency, don’t wait. Contact Tonka Smiles as soon as possible so we can provide the prompt, compassionate care you deserve.
