Addressing Dental Phobia: How Sedation Dentistry Offers a Solution for Fearful Patients

For some people, the mere thought of visiting the dentist can trigger intense fear and anxiety. In others, anxiety can reach the level of a dental phobia that interferes with dental care. If you are avoiding dental appointments because of anxiety or an overwhelming fear of the dentist, sedation dentistry can help.

Sedation dentistry helps provide a relaxed and stress-free experience for even the most fearful patients. At Tonka Smiles, we offer two kinds of sedation dentistry, nitrous oxide or oral sedation, which can be tailored to each patient’s needs and carefully monitored for effectiveness and safety.

Dental Anxiety or Dental Phobia?

Dental anxiety is common, with many patients reporting worry or apprehension when they visit the dentist. Dental phobia is more severe, often preventing sufferers from visiting the dentist at all because irrational or intense fear overwhelms them. For some, a traumatic event triggers dental phobia; for others, it may stem from feeling helpless or fearing pain. Fortunately, sedation dentistry can provide relief so that patients can successfully undergo dental treatment without anxiety or fear.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It aims to create a calm and anxiety-free environment, allowing individuals with dental phobia to receive the care they need comfortably. Sedation dentistry is particularly beneficial for patients undergoing complex or lengthy procedures and those with sensitive gag reflexes or difficulty sitting still. Tonka Smiles offers appropriate sedation dentistry options to all our patients. It is especially helpful for children, individuals who are neurodivergent, and anyone who has had a traumatic dental incident in the past.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is one of dentistry’s most widely used forms of sedation. It is administered through a mask placed over the patient’s nose, allowing them to inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Nitrous oxide induces relaxation and euphoria while keeping the patient conscious and able to communicate with the dentist throughout the procedure.

One of the critical advantages of nitrous oxide is its rapid onset and offset, allowing for precise control of sedation levels during the dental appointment. Additionally, its effects wear off

quickly after removing the mask, enabling patients to resume normal activities without lingering drowsiness.

Oral Sedation

Dr. Phillips also offers several levels of oral sedation. Oral sedation is administered in pill or liquid form to induce a state of relaxation and reduce anxiety. It is taken 30-60 minutes before the procedure to give it a chance to take effect, allowing patients to feel at ease throughout the procedure. Unlike nitrous oxide, oral sedation can provide deeper levels of relaxation, making it suitable for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety.

Commonly prescribed medications for oral sedation include benzodiazepines such as diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and triazolam (Halcion). These medications are soothing, relaxing, and amnesic, helping patients feel calm. Many patients do not recall their dental experience after the sedation has worn off.
