Start the Year with a Healthier Mouth: Tips for Reducing Cavities and Gum Disease in 2025

Embarking on the new year with improved habits for good oral health is not just a resolution, it’s a commitment. Our simple yet effective tips for reducing cavities and gum disease will empower you to keep your teeth and gums in top condition for 2025 and beyond.

  1. man chewing gumBrush Twice Daily: It may be tempting to skip brushing occasionally when you’re rushed in the morning or tired at night but don’t. Nightly brushing removes all the food and debris that have built up on your teeth during the day. Brushing in the morning removes plaque that accumulates overnight and freshens morning breath.
  2. Use Fluoride Toothpaste: The benefits of fluoride don’t diminish with age. It’s a powerful ally in the fight against cavities, capable of halting their progression and even reversing early stages. Its ability to re-mineralize tooth enamel provides long-term protection.
  3. Chew Xylitol Gum: You’re probably surprised to hear us tell you to chew gum, but we’re being specific – you must chew gum with xylitol, not sugar. Studies have confirmed that individuals who regularly chew gum containing xylitol have up to 75% less harmful bacteria in their mouths. Children chewing xylitol gum have fewer cavities than those who don’t. (Be sure to keep the gum away from pets, as xylitol is toxic to animals)
  4. Commit to a Nutrient-Rich Diet: A healthy diet filled with lots of nutrients and fiber is good for your overall and oral health. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamins K2, C, and D, are key to maintaining strong teeth and fighting cavities.
  5. Rinse with Saltwater: Warm salt water helps reduce puffy or swollen gums if you are in the early stages of gum disease. It can also ease the pain of gingivitis or periodontitis. As a preventive measure, it reduces harmful oral bacteria, removes debris that can lead to plaque, and relieves bad breath. Dissolve about ¾ teaspoons of table salt into a glass of warm water and stir until dissolved. Then, swish it around the mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out.
  6. Stop Using Your Teeth as Tools: You’re probably unaware of how often you use your teeth to rip open packages, bite off the end of a string, or chew on the end of a pencil. Any of these habits can damage your teeth. The teeth can wear down prematurely or, more often, they develop hairline cracks that cause pain. These cracks can lead to more serious dental issues if not addressed. So, stop using your teeth for anything other than eating or speaking to protect them from long-term damage.
  7. Drink Water After Sweets: You should always limit your consumption of sweets, but we all indulge occasionally. When you do have a sugary dessert or piece of candy, be sure you rinse your mouth thoroughly or drink a glass of water. This rinses away any leftover sugar residue and encourages saliva production, both of which can minimize the chances of acid erosion.
